I've tried to mirror what I can but a lot of images were converted to a copy-protected format which is hard to scrape. The source URLs don't show up anymore.
used to crawl friends' pages and snapshot the html + images to disk. last working version was 2017. the platform changed how it serves assets and i could never get it working again. no local mirrors, no local anything.
was supposed to dump comment threads to plaintext nightly. silkcities locked down the rss feeds in 2014. i kept it running on cached data for a while but the cache eventually got served the modernized output and corrupted everything.
admin changed all legacy accounts to display the default Web 2.0 theme. all my friend's pages are losing the custom themes we built back in the day. the only account that stands to benefit is louis's, because i never much liked that design.
they removed <marquee> support across the network last week. louis's page is going to look weird without it.
preservation log
silkcities migration notice arrived this morning. they're shutting down on may 13. that's two weeks. i can't pull the originals off the cdn. i can't pull anyone's pages cleanly. it's all locked behind copy protection now.
another image format change. .silk → .silkc. dev tools shows the new files as binary blobs.
marquee tags officially deprecated platform-wide. notified all the gang. nobody's responding much these days.
tammy's page got a forced theme reset. her music widget is gone. spent an evening trying to walk her through restoring it. she said don't bother.
silkcities sold to a new parent company. terms of service updated. the bit about preserving user content "in perpetuity" is gone.
image cdn moved. the originals appear to not have made the move.
silkmirror script fully broken after the latest css overhaul. took it down. wrote a 12-page postmortem nobody will read.
rss feeds removed from all silkcities pages. guestbook auto-archiver running on cached data only.
rolled out silkmirror v2. snapshots full pages including embedded media. tammy's page is 47mb. we're going to need a bigger drive.
fixed lizzy's page after the comment-system update bricked her embed. she didn't even know it was broken. nobody had been visiting.
steve's page hasn't been touched in three weeks. last post is from january. i think we have to accept that.
silkmirror script v1 finished. snapshotted the gang's pages last night, full text + images. linda, if you ever need any of this — i have it.
started the project log. i'm gonna keep notes on what changes here. someone has to.
