Social Media Impacted The 21st Century

What a bold statement right? Not really. I think we are all aware of the benefits and downsides that come with social media. From the start of AOL chat rooms to tik tok we have found ourselves growing in this big melting pot of having social interactions with the whole world. Social media has made it easier than ever to speak your mind without having much social repercussion at least in the early stages. Networking has become such a norm that people have learned how to brand themselves and make money from their social presence. But at what cost does this all entail? Many find success in these platforms and many find harm and self-hate but I think these are growing pains in order to move social culture into an online world.

instagram

Here is a prime example of why social media is the next step in social culture. In 2010, Instagram was an IOS only app that made it possible to post and make essentially a gallery of photos taken from someone’s phone. At this time no one saw the potential for this app and if anything people just saw it as another version of Tumblr. Forward a decade later and the whole world sees Instagram more than an app where people upload photos. Instagram allows users to earn money, sell products, network, premier premium content, and Livestream with your audience. New jobs have been created as a by-product of this app. People now host courses online on how to sell your image as a brand, how to gain more attraction & how to advertise yourself. Companies now offer Social Media Specialist positions. Entrepreneurs have been given the ultimate platform to sell products to a more specific niche. New possibles have been brought to life with social media and it does not stop with Instagram. Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, Twitch are all platforms that have given a new wave of work and social interaction. There’s a new social culture being built and we are just starting to ride the wave.
