Princess Aouda was taken from home in the princely state of Bundelkhand because her husband, a Hindu ruler had died. She was lead through the jungle so that she could be sacrificed by Hindu monks as a sati at her husband's funeral pyre.

Aouda is rescued by Phileas Fogg and Passepartout on a war elephant just before she was about to be burned alive.

On their travels to China, the trio fails to find Aouda's cousin who has moved to Holland. Mr. Fogg assures her that she will not burden their journey around the world.
